Course layout

This course is partitioned into 12 modules of varying length. Jointly they provide a comprehensive overview of the latest trends in crowd management and pedestrian traffic engineering. For a complete overview of the current state-of-the-art, start at the top left and work your way through all the modules 1-by-1.

This module introduces the need for crowd management and details the course objectives.

This module defines crowd management and scopes the type of actions a crowd manager will and not perform.

This modules introduces the choices that people make at a strategic, tactical and operational level.

Pedestrians’ strategic and tactical choices can be modelled. This module  provides an introduction in crowd choice modelling.

This module provides insights regarding how to influence the choice behaviour of visitors.

In order to objectify crowd management, we are in need of a quantitative way to describe crowd dynamics. This section describes the main variables to describe pedestrian flows.

This section shows two ways to evaluate traffic flow variables for crowds.

Advances in sensing and computation techniques have been rapidly following each other. Consequently, new monitoring technologies are introduced frequently.

Pedestrians operational choices can also be modelled. Another type of models is used for this purpose. This module elaborates on the main modelling types for crowd movement dynamics modelling.

Traffic management principles

Traffic engineers have developed 4 fundamental principles for traffic management. These principles can also be used to effectively manage crowds.

Intelligent Transportation Systems

Advances in sensing and computation techniques have been rapidly following each other. Consequently, new opportunities for crowd management arise using intelligent transportation systems.

Case studies

All across Europe crowd management pilots have been performed or are ungoing. This module provides an overview of these pilots and their main lessons for the future.
